The Mission of the Department of Public Instruction:
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state’s public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for a Legislative Affairs Director (Working Title: Government Affairs Director) for our Deputy State Superintendent Office.The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the principal contact and staff for the NC Department of Public Instruction with the NC General Assembly and, when necessary, the U.S. Congress, to ensure that the State and federal legislative policies and priorities are presented in a timely, accurate, and concise manner to the appropriate legislative bodies, to the executive branch including the Office of the Governor, local school systems, associations and any other education stakeholders. This position is the contact person representing the DPI with the members of the General Assembly, state legislative staff, the Office of the Governor, other governmental officials, school officials, and the business community in all matters pertaining to education legislation. This position is responsible for the initiation, development, and coordination of legislation for DPI as it impacts on all public schools in the state and is accountable for the legality, political, and educational viability of such legislation. It is responsible for articulating ratified state and federal education legislation to the State Superintendent, the State Board of Education, the Department staff, local school systems, educational associations, and other policy-making bodies through extensive training sessions, forums, conferences, and other presentations.   • Demonstrated skills in communicating leadership, organization, decision-making, writing, analysis and public speaking.

Master’s degree in political science, public administration, communications, journalism, English or closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of professional experience in lobbying, governmental relations, political campaigns, broadcasting, communications, public relations or related; or Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, communications, journalism, English or closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of professional experience in lobbying, governmental relations, political campaigns, broadcasting, communications, public relations, or related; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Supplemental and Contact InformationAll applicants must complete and submit a state application for employment using the NEOGOV Online Job Application System ( for the State of North Carolina.Any applications not received by the advertisement closing date and time will not be accepted outside of the portal.
