Description: The Berkeley Lab Computing Sciences (CS) web team is seeking an undergrad student to assist with web page development, posting website content, and handling related media tasks. This is a great opportunity for those studying communications, journalism, web design, or graphic design, but students from any course of study would be considered with commensurate experience. This is a rare opportunity to learn from highly experienced web development staff and science communicators in the context of a prestigious national lab.The CS Web Team Student Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Editing and fixing posts and pages in WordPress to match established templates
  • Fixing images that may be the wrong size or have missing alt text
  • Adding SEO-optimized metadata to existing pages across our web properties
  • Building or editing pages assigned by the team to match established templates

Candidates must be enrolled as a full-time student attending at an accredited school, college, or university and have:

  • Hands-on experience with web page creation and a good working knowledge of web design, WordPress experience is strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of basic HTML and CSS
  • Proficient knowledge of G-Suite applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive)
  • Excellent editorial skills, with an eye for following a style guide (such as AP style)
  • Excellent communication skills over chat, email, Slack, Asana, and Zoom
  • High motivation, organizational skills, and ability to self-direct
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately
  • Be able to take direction and manage changes with ease

Preferred candidates might also:

  • Be familiar with WordPress-specific CSS
  • Have basic knowledge of Photoshop and Lightroom applications
  • Know how to post to Vimeo and YouTube
  • Have experience with video tasks like video editing or captioning
  • Familiarity with Asana task management software
  • Experience managing assets in Box, Dropbox, or similar
  • Familiarity with using online image editing applications (Canva, Adobe Express)

  • This is a 1 year, 15hr/week, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position pays $18.67.
  • Flexible, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime.
  • This position may be subject to a background check.
  • As a condition of employment, the finalist will be required to disclose if they are subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct, are currently being investigated for misconduct, left a position during an investigation for alleged misconduct, or have filed an appeal with a previous employer.
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule – a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
