Description: General Statement of Duties:The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform any combination of instructional tasks and behavioral supports to assist students and teachers. Incumbents may teach one or more subjects to learners. A variety of behavioral intervention strategies will be implemented, with guidance from the supervising special education teacher(s). Supports related to adaptive abilities may be required in areas such as toileting/changing diapers, feeding and hygiene.
the incumbent.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Strive to implement the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and
objectives of the District.
2. Instruct students the lessons outlined per the teacher’s instructions. Discuss assigned
teaching area with teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
3. Promote learning and development through recognizing individual differences and cultural
patterns.
4. Interact with students utilizing a variety of methods and techniques such as lecturing,
demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
5. Assist all children, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce
learning concepts with the Instructor.
6. Administer tests to evaluate pupil progress, record results, and issue reports to inform parents
of progress and correct homework as directed by teacher.
7. Modify or adapt curriculum to meet the needs of the student, with collaboration of general
and special education teachers.
8. Assist with attendance records.
9. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Maintain discipline
in classroom. Ensure a safe environment for students and staff.
10. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity
and interests of the students.
11. Follow all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which
good teaching practice dictates.
12. Compose, type, and maintain routine correspondence, reports, and various other materials
and projects. Submit reports and documents as directed.
13. Operate modern office equipment, to include computers and educational equipment.
Perform other related duties and functions as assigned.
14. Attend meetings, training, and seminars as deemed appropriate and necessary.
15. Work directly with highly sensitive personnel and student information. Maintain
confidentiality of work related information.
16. Perform all duties in compliance with safety standards established by the District.Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications:High School Diploma or GED Certificate. Bachelor’s degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable to hiring authority.Ability to maintain confidentiality.Ability to work well with subordinates, public entities, educational professionals, etc.Minimum Certificates, Licenses, Examinations Qualifications:Valid South Dakota drivers license.Qualify as a paraprofessional as per the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001.Successful completion of written tests and/or verbal interviews.Other such examinations as deemed necessary by District.The special education director or supervising teacher may require individuals to be certified
in a behavioral de-escalation program (i.e. Crisis Prevention Institute/CPI, Safe Crisis
Management/SCM, etc.).The special education director or supervising teacher may require individuals to be certified
in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Salary: $14 per hour
