Description: Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in north Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for a full time Upper School History Teacher to teach four sections of Upper School History. This position would start with opening meetings in August, 2025. Applications will be reviewed starting in January 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
Responsibilities
The History teacher, reporting to the History Department Head and the Upper School Director, will join a highly collaborative department with colleagues who are creative and constantly exploring best practices for inclusive and culturally responsive pedagogy. The History Department offers a wide range of History and Social Science elective courses in addition to the core World and US History courses and encourages its members to bring their areas of expertise and passion to the team. Specific responsibilities for this position include: * Teaching four sections of World History and/or United States History or potentially electives, as needed. Classes study, discuss, and undertake a variety of assessment and project types as they engage with various cultural, social, political, and historical contexts. Class sizes are capped at 18 students.

  • Working with a diverse body of students who come to school with different and evolving lived experiences and levels of preparation. This work includes providing academic support for students with a range of learning styles and strengths outside of class time (answering questions, one-on-one work, etc.) as well as employing culturally responsive and anti-racist pedagogical strategies to achieve equitable support and outcomes for all students.
  • Actively collaborating and participating in the work of the History Department on innovative, inclusive, and equitable curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment.
  • Attending grade-level team and faculty meetings as scheduled.
  • Acting as an advisor for 8 to 10 high school students.
  • Writing evaluations of students at each marking period.
  • Actively participating in the life of the school community, including a distributed leadership role, such as advising a student club or activity within the school day, joining a standing committee, or chaperoning.

Requirements and Qualifications
A successful candidate for this position will meet the following requirements and qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist pedagogy, culturally-responsive teaching, and embracing difference, including knowledge of themselves and the lenses of identity they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
  • Prior experience working with a diverse student population and demonstrated equity and inclusion mindset.
  • A commitment to and proven experience incorporating diverse perspectives, voices, and viewpoints into the curriculum.
  • A bachelor’s degree in History or a closely related field;
  • Experience teaching History, preferably to high school students, and a passion for interacting with high school students in and outside of the classroom;
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate difficult conversations about systems of identity, privilege, and power, and how those systems of affect us;
  • Creation of an inclusive learning environment where all students feel seen, valued and heard;
  • Proficiency in technology and digital teaching tools;
  • Candidates must satisfactorily complete three nationwide criminal background checks.
