The School Safety Officer is responsible for helping to ensure a safe and secure school environment for students, staff, and visitors at the assigned school campus. The School Safety Officer is highly visible in the parking lots, crosswalks, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and school grounds. Daily functions include patrolling of the school campus, parking lots, school facilities, and grounds and interacting positively with students, staff, families, and visitors. The School Safety Officer monitors campus security systems, aides in school safety drills, and provides the first response to intrusions or threats to school safety, working in conjunction with Kennewick Police Department and school/district administrators.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must currently or in the past have been a Commissioned Peace Officer accredited through a state certified training program; must have served as a Police Officer for a municipal, county or state law enforcement agency in the United States.
  • Successful completion of training or certification programs related to position. Must attend in-service training courses or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
  • Must present transcripts of the highest level of education within thirty (30) days of hire, if applicable.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Must possess current first aid card/CPR card or willingness to acquire one.
  • Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
  • Positive references from previous employers.
  • Must commit to work the entire school year.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED * Previous commissioned police officer experience (if you have questions regarding qualifications, please email matt.scott@ksd.org).

  • Ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative, and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees, and management.
  • Ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement
  • Demonstration of sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job-related activities.
  • Ability to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read and respond to email.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, conflict resolution capabilities, ability to collect objective data, diffuse tense situations, and mediate conflicts.
  • Must manage unpredictable situations; be flexible, diplomatic, cooperative and patient, while maintaining enthusiasm and exercising good judgment in difficult situations.
  • Must have evidence of positive evaluations and recommendations that support character and work ethic.
  • Must demonstrate excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability; evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED * AA or BA degree or equivalent in related field.

  • Bilingual preferred.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES * Uphold all board policies and follow administrative procedures.

  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Supervise and maintain order in and about school property including school grounds, playgrounds, cafeterias, restrooms, parking lots, hallways, and areas on and near campus where students congregate.
  • Maintain visibility and be immediately available for assisting staff and students in routine and emergency situations.
  • Confront intruders and report all observed violations (trespassers and law violators) to the appropriate administrator.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff in maintaining a safe, orderly environment for all.
  • Assist in supervising and maintaining order at recess and lunch.
  • Model appropriate and healthy adult behavior toward students, staff, and parents.
  • Nurture and give attention to students with special needs.
  • Work effectively with diverse student populations.
  • Interact and communicate with police department as needed.
  • Work with principal to maintain building policies and procedures.
  • Provide strong, positive interpersonal skills that diffuse situations and reduce tension.
  • Perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.

  • Mobility: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, push or pull 18-26 lbs., sit, kneel and crouch, twist and bend, use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arm.
  • Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. The employee is required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 18-26 pounds; must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

  • Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of temperatures; from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F +. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.
