Description: Facilitate the achievement of all students by developing and implementing a Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program. Provide counseling services to assist students in maximizing their educational experiences by helping them adapt to the school environment, make educational, occupational and life plans, and overcome problems that impede learning. Plan, schedule, organize, and deliver counseling activities consistent with student academic, career, and personal needs. Demonstrate integrity and ethics.QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:

  • Master\’s degree in counseling or related field required
  • Texas School Counselor Certification or Eligible for Texas Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge and understanding of the ASCA Model and Texas Model for Comprehensive
School Counseling Programs.
*Knowledge of counseling theories/techniques, procedures, student appraisal, career
development and post-secondary opportunities.
*Knowledge of the school and community resources available to assist students
and parents.
*Knowledge of student support for social and emotional health.
*Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
*Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Experience:

  • Three years of successful teaching experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Instructional Management * Implement the school guidance and counseling program to support the district mission, goals, and plans.

  • Assume leadership in implementing and scheduling for the guidance classes.
  • Provide classroom guidance and counseling activities for students.
  • Consult with teachers to make adjustments to meet the individual needs of pupils.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in counseling skills.

School/Organizational Climate * Present a positive role model for students.

  • Maintain professional relationships conducive to cooperation and teamwork.
  • Comply with district and school policies and regulations.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Attend to referrals by teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • Advocate students.

School/Organizational Improvement * Assist in using and interpreting test data for the improvement of instruction.

  • Consult with students, teachers, and parents to meet special needs of students.
  • Address and support campus goals, objectives, and improvement plans.
  • Share guidance materials from professional meetings and publications.
  • Submit reports and information in a timely and professional manner.
  • Initiate an evaluation of the campus guidance program.

Student Management * Help students establish goals, determine their abilities and achievement potential, focus on their strengths, and improve their weaknesses.

  • Provide intervention and support services through individual and small group sessions based on student\’s presenting needs/concerns.
  • Work with parents and school staff to meet the individual needs of referred students.
  • Interact positively and effectively with all students.
  • Make referrals and work with the referral source to meet students\’ needs for follow-up activities/services.

School/Community Relations * Encourage parental involvement.

  • Articulate the need for benefits of the guidance and counseling program.
  • Foster activities that enhance the relationships between the school and community.
  • Utilize the community members as resource volunteers, special friends, and partners in education.
  • Provide information to parents and community about the educational program in general and the guidance program in particular.

Professional Growth and Development * Develop and maintain a plan for professional improvement, including 20 hours of staff development.

  • Use surveys and feedback from others to evaluate the counseling program.
  • Adhere to ethical, legal, and professional standards.
  • Affiliate with professional counseling associations at expense of counselor.
  • Be knowledgeable of current research and practices and integrate them into counseling activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise clerical employee(s) and assigned counseling aides.WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands

  • Maintain emotional and physical stability in order to work with parents and students on a variety of issues
  • Work with frequent interruptions
  • Occasional prolonged or irregular hours of work

Physical Demands

  • Light lifting, light carrying, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, repetitive hand motions; frequent bending and stooping
  • Prolonged use of computer

Environmental Demands

  • Normal office environment
  • Occasional statewide and districtwide travel

**The State Board for Educator Certification will require all first time applicants for an initial credential to be fingerprinted as part of a national criminal background check.
