The incumbent will equip and motivate SHRM members to take an active role in influencing the issues that concern them. The incumbent will also work on special projects that further the division’s role in the organization’s overall strategy.Position Description
- Establishes and maintains relationships with elected officials, appointed officials, strategic partners, SHRM members, and other stakeholders to advance SHRM’s overall legislative and policy objectives.
- Monitors and analyzes appropriate pending legislation to determine key issues and potential cost/benefit to membership interests.
- Prepares oral and written testimony, briefs, position statements and summaries on legislative and policy issues consistent with SHRM’s objectives.
- Analyzes information, facilitates research, solicits input from SHRM panels and volunteers, consultants and draft position papers on HR legislative and policy issues for consideration by the SHRM Board.
- Conducts presentations and training sessions on HR legislative and policy issues at national, state and chapter conferences and meetings as well as to outside stakeholder groups on behalf of SHRM.
- Serves, as appropriate, in leadership and other capacities in coalitions with other associations and organizations on HR legislative and policy issues.
- Assists SHRM members in advocating on HR public policy issues before elected bodies.
- Creates educational materials and programs for use by SHRM volunteer leaders and member advocates to build and strengthen their advocacy activities, providing background material, advice and counsel to further our member advocacy efforts.
- Assists with conferences and other events that showcase policy and advocacy efforts.
- Works on special projects that connect the division’s work to the overall strategy of the organization.

Position Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 6 years’ experience working on federal issues related to healthcare, tax and/or labor policy within the executive or agency branches, a government relations office, trade association, campaign, grassroots firm or other organization.
- Knowledge of the legislative, regulatory, and judicial process.
- Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in giving public presentations or speaking activities.
- Creative approaches to problem solving.
- Ability to simultaneously coordinate a variety of complex projects and work within activity program deadlines.
- Ability and interest to travel for business.
- Proficient in Microsoft (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel).
- Knowledge of Social Media tools.
- Solid customer service commitment: resourceful, diplomatic, team-oriented and sensitive to the needs of members and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, while successfully delivering to internal and external customers at all levels in a timely manner.
- Preferred
- Understanding of HR issues/laws specifically related to healthcare, tax and labor.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.
- Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
- Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.
Work Environment
- Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and conference settings and routinely uses standard office equipment.

#LI – HybridThe hiring range for this position is $90,000 to $115,000 per year. This range is an estimate and the actual salary may vary based on the candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications. SHRM offers a competitive and comprehensive total rewards package.
